COMPLEX SUBJECT
I
The Infinitive is used after the word-groups
to be (un)likely, to be sure, to be certain, to be bound.
The Russian equivalent is: вероятно/маловероятно, вряд ли, конечно, наверняка, обязательно.

Don’t worry. Things are sure to get better.
This book is bound to be remembered.
He is unlikely to make this mistake again.
She is sure to have talked to the director.

II
The Infinitive is used after the verbs to seem, to appear.
The Russian equivalent is: кажется, казалось, по-видимому.

He seems | seemed to read a lot, his knowledge is/was surprising.
appears | appeared to be reading something funny, he’s smiling.
doesn’t | (didn’t) to have read the note, he looks sad.
seem/ appear to have been reading for a whole day.
to be given information regularly.
to have been told the news

III
The Infinitive is used after the verbs to happen, to chance (книжн.)
The Russian equivalent is: случайно, случилось так...

Only yesterday we happened to see him in the theatre.
By 11 o’clock her mother had chanced to look into her room.
Do you happen to know where this book is sold?

IV
The Infinitive is used after to turn out, to prove
The Russian equivalent is оказался, оказываться

The experiment proved to be a failure.
They all turned out to be good fighters.

complex subject
consist of 2 parts
nominal part (=expressed by the noun or personal pronoun) + verbal part (=expressed by the infinitive usually with particle TO)

1) Group of physical ability in Passive voice = he was seen to cross the street
2) Mental ability in Passive = he is known to be a good journalist
3) After verbs: to seem, to appear, to turn out (оказаться) = he seem to be a polite child
4) To be likely/unlikely, sure, certain, to be bound = he is likely to be one of your friends

Exercise: Translate into English using the complex subject with the infinitive.
1. Говорят, что экспедиция собрала очень интересный материал о природных богатствах этого района.
The expedition is said to have collected a very interesting material about the natural resources of the district.

2. Сообщалось, что в этот район послана большая группа строителей.
A large group of builders is reported to be sent to this district.

3. Предполагается, что в этом районе будет создан новый город.
A new town is supposed to be built in this district

4. Полагают, что они уже доехали до места назначения.
They are supposed to come already to the place of destination.

5. Никак не ожидали, что холода наступят так рано.
Cold weather was not expected to come so early.

6. Как сообщают, средняя температура мая в этом году значительно ниже, чем в прошлом.
This year the average temperature of May is reported to be considerably lower than it was last year.

7. Вряд ли его можно заставить сделать что-нибудь, если он этого не захочет.
He is unlikely to make him do something if he doesn’t want this.

8. Говорят, что этот токарь работает сейчас над новым рационализаторским предложением.
This turner is said to be working at the new rationalization proposal now.

9. Полагают, что это изобретение поможет сэкономить много металла.
This invention is supposed to help save much metal.

10. Оказалось, что мы уже когда-то встречались.
We appeared to have met once.

11. Вы, кажется, устали. Не хотите ли отдохнуть?
You seem to be tired. Don’t you want to rest?

12. Условия работы оказались более трудными, чем предполагалось.
The conditions of work proved to be more difficult than they were supposed.

13. Я уверен, вам эта пьеса понравится.
You are sure to like this play.

14. Было слышно, как она что-то напевала, сбегая вниз по лестнице.
She was head to sing something going downstairs.

Every day he was seen to work in the garden every day.

This proposal is likely to interest him

10. Надеюсь, вряд ли будут возражения (objections) против такой повестки дня (agenda).
I hope objections are unlikely to be against such an agenda.

We proved to have many mutual acquaintances.

He was never seen to be so excited.

Now our research is considered to be completed.

1. Очень вероятно, что мои родные поедут летом в Крым.
My relatives are likely to go to the Crimea in summer.

2. Если вы хотите поговорить c моей сестрой, позвоните ей сейчас по телефону. Она, наверное, дома. Она вряд ли будет дома завтра.
If you want to speak to my sister, ring her up now. She is sure to be at home. She is unlikely to be at home tomorrow.

3. Вчера я случайно встретил вашего товарища. Он, кажется, очень торопился. Yesterday I happened to meet your friend. He seems to have hurried.

4. Он, по-видимому, работает в нашем районе.
He is likely to work in our district
